TRANSFORM SAFETY COMPLIANCE
A DMC risk engineer aimed to help a client reduce their lighting-related vehicle maintenance violations and set a goal to reduce their violation scores by 8% in 5 months. By utilizing a combination of DMC reports and CSA data analyses, the risk engineer provided detailed information on violations by Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for both trailers and tractors, pinpointing where most issues were occurring. The DMC risk engineer also engaged with the customer’s executive team, encouraging them to take a more visible role in fostering compliance. The leadership team, eager to find a solution, began conducting regular on-site visits to terminals alongside the safety team. During these visits, they conducted performance assessments and random inspections, reinforcing a culture of safety and compliance.
The customer shattered their 5-month goal, and within 9 months, they have reduced their maintenance violations that are directly related to lighting by 46%. These initiatives have significantly improved the customer’s maintenance practices, reflecting a positive trajectory toward enhanced safety standards and operational excellence.

After reviewing a customer’s loss reports, DMC Risk Engineering found that sideswipe and rear-end collisions were the most frequent preventable crashes. To address this, our risk engineer worked closely with terminal managers across multiple locations, setting safety goals to reduce crashes and speeding violations.
He established regular communications and visits, presenting detailed loss reports with heatmaps to highlight trends and problem areas. Terminal managers were coached to interpret these reports and track trends independently. Training was tailored to address sideswipe and rear-end incidents, focusing on lane awareness, mirror adjustments, and blind spot checks. This process fostered ongoing safety discussions between managers and drivers.
At one terminal, a “safety corner” was created to display educational materials and encourage safety dialogue, boosting driver engagement. Another initiative prioritized speed scores on daily driver scorecards, with bonuses for those who consistently followed speed limits.
These efforts led to a 58% reduction in sideswipe crashes, a 50% reduction in rear-end crashes, and a 67% decrease in speeding violations, saving over $1.6M. This partnership highlights the value of targeted risk management and the impact of DMC’s risk engineering in improving road safety and delivering significant financial savings.
CUSTOMIZED DATA ANALYSIS REDUCES CRASH FREQUENCY
Our team used DMC data to create customized loss analysis reports, organizing the information by crash type and terminal. Each month, our risk engineer presented and reviewed these reports with the customer’s safety team.
The client provided our team with access to their telematics data, and with that access, our team was also able to complete a thorough speed and space-management review. The data was cross-referenced with loss analysis reports to create a targeted driver coaching strategy.
Additionally, our risk engineer recommended and helped implement a new camera system and fender mirrors that are more effective for their operation type than their trucks’ previous equipment. With the analytical support and guidance from our risk engineer, the customer lowered their sideswipe crash frequency by an impressive 12% over the six-month period, exceeding their original goal.
IMPROVED CSA UNSAFE DRIVING SCORE BY 16%
A DMC customer was looking to improve their CSA Unsafe Driving score, which was trending into alert status, and reached out for assistance. Their dedicated DMC risk engineer worked with them to enhance their safety campaigns. The risk engineer provided various reports that exposed where the company’s violations were occurring, including customized reports from the DMC Data Science department using FMCSA data that uncovered key insights regarding inspections, violations, and crashes.
The customer was very receptive and took focused action. Within three months of this collaboration, their Unsafe Driving score had improved by 16% and was no longer on the verge of alert status.
DIMINISHING THE DATA NOISE TO FIND ACTIONABLE INSIGHTS
A customer was looking for help assessing which driver violations they should prioritize. Our Risk Engineering team analyzed the company’s driving data over a 12-month period. From this baseline, there were thousands of system-triggered speeding events among 250 drivers at 15 different terminals. The customer was not equipped to identify where to prioritize resources. After some initial study of loss history by the DMC risk engineer, we dug deeper to determine which were the most concerning events. They created a new event type that combined when a speeding alert immediately preceded a hard braking alert. In the risk engineer’s opinion, this was indicative of speeding in congested areas or other situations that were more likely to result in a severe accident.
Starting from this prioritized alert combination, we were able to reduce the most critical observations by 99.9% and identify the small subset of drivers that gave rise to this new, more consequential event type. By isolating the most at-risk drivers of the large driving force, we provided data-backed, targeted coaching opportunities for our customer’s safety team.
The customer now has a data framework they can utilize to monitor and address these incidents going forward, helping them prevent future accidents.

DMC’s Risk Engineering department set a goal with a customer to reduce their preventable DOT accidents and Hours of Service violations. To achieve this, the DMC risk engineer provided regular analyses of their Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA) and loss data, as well as a predictive model for their CSA scores. We also introduced them to training resources to help address their most acute opportunities.
As a result of this initiative, the client implemented a detailed communication plan that regularly provided performance information to drivers and the president of the trucking operation. The senior-level support from within the organization helped to expedite the progress in reducing violations and accidents. Since implementing these new procedures, the company has reduced their monthly DOT recordable accidents by 19% and reduced their Hours of Service violations by 15%.
