Charles Smith has been named the 2023 DMC Insurance Driver of the Year. All of our insureds were given the opportunity to nominate up to three drivers for this recognition. Charles was deservedly selected as the winning driver by our judging committee, comprised of external and internal trucking industry experts. DMC presents the award annually to a driver from our insured portfolio based on their driving record, mentorship within their company, and service in support of the industry and their community. DMC was proud to recognize Charles by hosting an appreciation ceremony at his home terminal in Cleveland, TN. The event and award celebrate Charles’ exceptional commitment to safety with several noteworthy accomplishments, including an impressive track record of driving nearly 3 million miles. While all of the candidates were impressive, Charles’ long driving history and dedication to teaching others in the profession set him apart. Charles served our country for 20 years in the U.S. Army and was a driver trainer and instructor for the majority of that time. Additionally, he has been a driver trainer at FirstFleet for 22 years, educating drivers about safe driving practices and customer service. He is meticulous in his approach to his work and was selected as a 2023-2024 Tennessee Road Team Captain, through which he has begun to teach the next generation of truck drivers. His 40+ years in the industry, mentorship to FirstFleet’s driver base, and continuous service to his country and community represent exactly the type of candidate we aim to honor through this award.

In addition to co-workers, executives from both companies spoke about Charles’ exceptional driving record and commitment to his country, family, and employer. Vikas Shah, EVP of Marketing & Analytics at DMC said, “We honor so many drivers that are unsung heroes. Year after year, they do their jobs with commitment, consistency, and character. Charles is one of those drivers that we want to celebrate. He exemplifies why we created this award.”

When asked about his driving career, Charles remarked, “What I love about being a truck driver is the freedom that you get while you’re in the truck and on the road. You’re like the captain of a ship. This is my ship, and I’m the captain. Whatever happens, I’m responsible for it.”

The celebration concluded with a catered lunch for the entire company, provided by DMC.

Congratulations, Charles, and thank you for your dedication to safe driving!

We were extremely impressed with the caliber of drivers that were nominated by our insureds. Each one deserves recognition for their hard work, safe driving, and commitment to the trucking industry. Thank you to all nominators that took the time to submit a candidate and share their stories.

Rudy Kroll has been named the 2022 DMC Insurance Driver of the Year. DMC presents the award annually to an insured driver chosen based on their driving record, mentorship within their company, and leadership and service in support of the industry and their community. DMC was proud to recognize Rudy by hosting an appreciation ceremony at his home terminal, the CTI, Inc. headquarters, in Rillito, AZ. The event and award celebrate Rudy’s exceptional commitment to safety over his 50-year career, of which 38 years are with CTI, including over 2 million accident and incident-free miles.

After the award presentation, conducted by representatives from DMC, Rudy’s co-workers gave heartfelt remarks in front of a full room of CTI drivers and office staff. Supporters turned up in large numbers to celebrate Rudy and share stories about the significant impact he has had on them personally and professionally over the years.

The prominence of the award and the deep respect and appreciation for Rudy was highlighted by a passionate speech from Rudy’s nominator and CTI Senior Risk Manager, Christie Blair. She shared, “I could not be more honored and more humbled to be a part of this process. Not just because of who you are as a driver, but because of who you are as a person, Rudy.

I am incredibly blessed, and we’re blessed here at CTI, to have you with our company, but I personally am blessed to know you as a person. You are one of the most humble people that I know, and humility and sincerity these days are very rare. You have been a hardworking man your entire life. You have lived a life of sacrifice, first for your country, always for your family, for your church, and for our company. You are a remarkable person, and this world is a better place for people like you. There is no one more deserving of this award than you, not just here at our company, not just in this state, but in the nation.”

Jonathan Schindler, Rudy’s manager at CTI, said, “I learned from Rudy. He showed me what I needed to do and how I needed to treat my fellow employees.

I’m still nowhere near his level, but he’s my guide on how to treat people. You’ve helped everybody and never asked for anything. This is our way of giving back to you because you deserve it.” In addition to co-workers, executives from both companies spoke about Rudy’s exceptional driving record and commitment to his community, family, employer, and church. Gregg Gibbons, owner of CTI, said, “I’ve seen a lot of people come and go through this organization. They drive for a year or two and back and forth, but nobody’s really stayed this long, and it’s a real pleasure to have an employee like Rudy.” Vikas Shah, DMC’s Executive Vice President of marketing and analytics said, “It’s worth noting the accolades of today’s winner. Thirty-eight years driving for CTI, not just accident-free and incident-free, but also violation-free. That is the pinnacle of the special breed of drivers this program celebrates. That’s the caliber of gentleman we’re recognizing today.”

When asked about his driving career, Rudy remarked, “I believe I was called [to truck driving] by God himself. I didn’t understand it at the time… It’s a pretty cool thing to be recognized. If you seek it out for yourself and get it, it doesn’t mean as much. I had no idea until about a month ago that I was nominated and that it was a nationwide award. I didn’t know there were so many people competing for the award. It was just a cool thing just to be nominated. I wish my wife were here to see it, she passed last year, and we were married almost 41 years.”

Following the award ceremony and speeches, a procession of attendees shared handshakes and hugs with Rudy congratulating him on the award and all of his accomplishments. The celebration concluded with a catered lunch for the entire company, provided by DMC.

Congratulations Rudy, and thank you for your dedication to safe driving!

We were extremely impressed with the caliber of drivers that were nominated by our insureds. Each and every one deserves recognition for their hard work, safe driving, and commitment to the trucking industry. Thank you to all nominators that took the time to submit a candidate and share their stories.

Rudy was unanimously selected as the winning driver by a committee comprised of trucking industry experts. The award and accompanying prize package will be presented to Rudy during an appreciation event that DMC will hold at the CTI headquarters, in Rillito, AZ, on Friday, July 15, 2022. “Rudy has been employed with CTI for nearly 38 years. I cannot think of any driver more qualified and deserving of DMC Driver of the Year than he, and I am both honored and humbled to be permitted the opportunity to nominate him.

Despite his long career as a driver with CTI and over two million miles, Rudy has never been involved in a single accident, collision, or incident. Rudy is our most senior driver and has always been a model example for all drivers with our company. Rudy is very conscientious about the work that he does and follows all rules and regulations to a superior degree. Safety has always been key to Rudy, not only in his driving habits but down to making the most thorough and detailed pre-and post-trip inspections. Rudy also consistently goes above and beyond to be there for all of our drivers, serving as a most excellent mentor. He is always kind, personable, and willing to help anyone and everyone.

Not only is Rudy’s commitment to CTI exemplary, but his entire life has been one of sacrifice for his country and family. During the Vietnam War era, Rudy honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He continues to be a person of impeccable character and integrity. We are grateful to Rudy for his service not only to our country but also to our company. Moreover, this past year Rudy lost his beloved wife and partner for several decades, and yet Rudy did not take time off work, continuing to care for his adult children and grandchildren. He is also active in community service through his dedicated involvement with his church.

In the nearly forty years he has been with CTI, Rudy has been one of the most dependable employees, second to none, and willing to always go the extra mile when need be. In conclusion, I cannot think of anyone who is better suited or better deserving, both personally and professionally, than Rudolph Kroll for DMC Driver of the Year.”

– Sincerely, Christie Blair, J.D., Senior Risk Manager at CTI, Inc.

Bill Nearhoof Driver of the Year

BILL NEARHOOF OF PITT OHIO

DMC is proud to announce the selection of Bill Nearhoof as our 2021 DMC Driver of the Year. Bill has been a professional driver for 44 years, dedicating the past 41 of those years as an evening-shift linehaul driver for PITT OHIO out of their Baltimore, MD terminal. He has accumulated over 3.8 million miles without ever being in an accident or incurring a traffic violation. A truly extraordinary feat!

In addition to his safe-driving record, Bill is a certified Smith System instructor that has trained over a hundred drivers as a lead trainer for PITT OHIO. Bill served in the U.S. Navy and still actively contributes to the Maryland Food Bank, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and VFW Post 6321. “40 years working nights is just astonishing,” said Jon Guidry, the Baltimore terminal manager. “I think it’s important for people to understand how remarkable it is for Bill to have his safety record with all that he does and working nights for over 40 years.”

Bill has been employed with Pitt Ohio for 41 years. Over his long tenure with the company, Bill started first as a pickup and delivery driver for 4 years. He then moved to the operation side and worked as a supervisor, where he still drove and made deliveries and pickups. After a short time in supervision, Bill went back to driving, but this time in the linehaul position.

I met Bill when I first started driving for PITT OHIO in 1986, and his positive attitude, friendly demeanor, and professional work ethic have always impressed me. Bill’s genuine, uplifting disposition resonates well with all of his co-workers. As a trainer for many years, Bill was someone that new hires would look up to. Bill became a certified Smith System instructor and instructed well over 100 newly hired drivers in addition to remedial training.

When reviewing Bill’s 41-year history at PITT OHIO, you could say he is the type of driver that any company would want their employees to emulate. In addition to an outstanding driving record, Bill has had 3 Bendix video events, all categorized as good defensive driving. Bill’s commitment to highway safety is second to none, and his exemplary driving record proves that he takes that responsibility seriously each and every day.

Bill has over three million miles of accident-free driving, joining the prestigious Three Million Mile Club with a total of 41 years accident-free with PITT OHIO, in addition to 3 years safe driving prior.

Bill served in the U.S. Navy Seabees from 1973 to 1979 and has a history of actively contributing to charities such as the Maryland Food Bank, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, and VFW Post 6321.

In summary, Willard Nearhoof is an excellent candidate for DMC Driver of the Year, and I strongly endorse his nomination and respectfully ask for your positive consideration of this exceptional driver.

Sincerely,

– Dean Yockey, Manager, Training & Development at PITT OHIO

CONGRATULATIONS

BILL KERRY

DMC’S 2020 DRIVER OF

THE YEAR!

William “Bill” Kerry of John Brown Trucking, a subsidiary of American Bulk Commodities, Inc., has been selected as DMC Insurance’s Driver of the Year. The winning driver is chosen as someone who exemplifies a commitment to safety, provides exceptional service and leadership, and gives back to the community and industry.

Bill has been a professional truck driver since 1965 without having a single accident or moving violation citation. For over 50 years, he has done over-the-road hauls from the Pittsburgh area into the Carolinas, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, and West Virginia. John Brown Trucking specializes in the hauling of alloy, scrap metal, construction materials, and other industrial products. At the age of 73, Bill continues to haul these loads daily, moving to local routes in Pennsylvania and Ohio just in the last two years. He is a true professional and has been a strong role model to his peers. Bill was nominated for the Driver of the Year award by his Terminal Manager, Harry Frelin. Harry passionately championed Bill as deserving of the honor, writing a heartfelt essay to accompany his application. Harry’s been with John Brown Trucking for 20 years, after spending 20 years as a driver himself. He understands the intricacies of what it takes to be a safe driver, and every day he notices Bill’s attention to the little details and ways of operating that make all the difference. His appreciation of Bill was perfectly summarized when he said, “If I only owned one truck, Bill Kerry would be the first driver I would ask to drive it.”

“Bill Kerry, Bill, now 73 years young, has been driving trucks since 1965, that’s not a typo! It’s 1965! He started at John Brown Trucking in 1980. Bill is old school and these 55 years of experience certainly show. Bill’s safety record speaks for itself, I am not aware of Bill ever having an accident. Many things go into being safe, like details. I see Bill’s attention to details every day, even the small details that make a difference. Bill is a true professional and takes a lot of pride in his job. That pride is a big factor for making Bill the excellent driver he is. Not only does he keep the cleanest truck in the fleet, he keeps it mechanically sound. A big compliment is when drivers talk about other drivers, and when they do, Bill’s name always comes up in highest regard. Bill never hesitates to lend a hand to any of the other drivers whether a new driver or one with more tenure, whether helping them with something simple as paperwork, washing their truck or even tarping. The knowledge he shares with other drivers is most valuable, as they all pertain to being a safe driver, everything from company policies, mechanical details and all of the latest safety features our trucks are equipped with. When you think about when Bill started driving in 1965, there have been so many changes he has been a part of in the industry through all of those years. Remember trucks weren’t as safe back then as they are today, yet Bill has been able to adapt to all of the changes and remain a safe and courteous driver. There is something to be said when you can’t count the millions and millions of safe driving miles you compiled in your career. This is really something that shouldn’t go unnoticed. We can use data and document many aspects of safety, but there are so many other things related to safety in a driver’s daily duties that go undocumented. Being in management, I see Bill Kerry perform these duties every day. If I only owned 1 truck, Bill Kerry would be the first driver I would ask to drive it. Bill has conducted himself in a safe and professional manner for 55 years, which is unprecedented in the trucking industry today. Winning this award would be a great way to put an exclamation point on an exceptionally safe and stellar career. This is why Bill Kerry should be considered for the DMC Driver of the Year!” – Harry Frelin, Terminal Manager at John Brown Trucking, a subsidiary of American Bulk Commodities, Inc.

On Wednesday, June 24, 2020, representatives from DMC Insurance, along with American Bulk Commodities’ executive team, were on site at the R & J Trucking, also a subsidiary of American Bulk Commodities, Inc., headquarters in Youngstown, OH to present Bill Kerry the award. “We started the Driver of the Year Award as a way to give recognition to the safe drivers of our insureds that really go above-and-beyond to positively impact the trucking industry,” stated Stacy Renz, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at DMC Insurance, Inc.  “The drivers nominated have exceptional safety records while also making the effort to be leaders in their companies and their communities. There are so many great people that work every day to make our supply chain operate smoothly, and we just wanted to show our appreciation for their efforts.”

Bill has an exceptional safety record and his dedication to passing on the knowledge and expertise he’s gained over his career to novice drivers was a big aspect of why he was selected for this award. When asked what Bill would tell a new driver starting out today, he advised, “I’m always constantly aware of my surroundings. Constantly. I don’t get in a hurry. I’ve found that those that get in a hurry, that’s when a lot of problems come up. Through the years, I just go at my own pace. Be patient. Something can happen just in the blink of an eye, I’ve seen it happen too many times. Just be patient.”

Congratulations to Bill and the entire American Bulk Commodities, Inc. team for this much-deserved recognition. Drivers like Bill make us exceptionally proud to be a part of this great industry, and it was our honor to partner with our insured to show our appreciation for all the work and effort he has put in during his 55-year career in trucking.
